Listen to the Coonabarabran Centenary Revue - October 1960

The Revue

In 1960 the Dramatic Society staged a Revue to celebrate Coonabarabran's Centenary. This was held in the Savoy Theatre for one night only and it was of course packed out. The Revue went for some hours with an interval in the middle.

Portions of this Revue were recorded in what may be the first public recording made in Coonabarabran. The equipment used was an early National reel to reel recorder with a single microphone borrowed from Bruce Rushton. The recording conditions were very primitive. As not everyone was happy about the recording being made, the microphone was hidden in a pot plant at the front of the stage near the piano. The singers moved around the stage, so it is astounding that the recording worked at all. Remember that at this time there was no sound amplicification so the singers had to use the power of their voices for the audience to hear them.

Not every song was recorded, and some songs have only portions recorded. These recordings will take you back to a time before television when people created their own entertainment.
